As organizers of the Xceara, world cross country competition which is held in Quixada – CE for the past 12 years, we from GO UP BRAZIL are year by year more determined to help the needy north-eastern Sertao. This is a place which offers excellent flying conditions to hundreds of pilots from all over the world, bringing about the breaking of personal, local and even world records.
We have been studying what would be the best ways to help the local population, who have always been so helpful to us during these 12 years of cross country flights in the northeast. People who many times offer us their last drink of water, their last plate of food, out of kindness, to help.
We, therefore, decided to create an event which united the sport to a social project in all of this region, helping not only with material things but helping to develop the adventure tourism in general in Sertão, providing this people a new option for their lives.
Of this fusion of sporting objective and social idealism was born the project “SOSertão Race & Rally”.
THE TASKS
The aim is to cross from Recife to Lencois Maranhenses (one of the most famous and beautiful Brazilian national parks) by hang glider and paraglider, travelling 1080km, during 7 days of flying, taking-off from 7 diferent sites.
The "Route 1080" will be the biggest free-flying rally in the World.
The tasks will be of RACE between the cities, that's why its called "Race & Rally".
The Brazilian Sertão is a very wellknown all over the world as the "Cross Country Paradise". One of the best and most constant places to make long distance flights. The local records are 436km for Hang Gliders and 380km for Paragliders. Another very important data, is that in 12 years`of XCeará, 7 out 7 tasks in a row were flown during all this years !
Such long distance event could only be reached by a research done by GO UP BRAZIL in the last 5 years in this region, creating a route where the task legs are set together following the releif data studies and the Alisios winds orientation, predominant in this region.
Parallel to the air rally, a social project will be taking place on the ground which will take to the north-eastern sertao food, culture, sport, art and health via the caravan which will be following the route.
The caravan will be composed of 20 hang gliders, 10 paragliders,5 trikes, 15 cars, 2 trucks, and 2 buses.
